On May 6 the Longhouse Council will welcome famed helicopter pilot Michael J. Durant as the guest speaker at its Friends of Scouting dinner.
Durant was the pilot of Black Hawk Super Six Four that enemy forces brought down in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993. The tragic and trying event and his subsequent 11-day captivity in Somalia saw Durant return stateside safely. None of his crew survived, however.
Durant’s heroism is immortalized in the book “Black Hawk Down” and an Academy Award-winning film of the same name.
The pilot and author will address attendees of the Longhouse Council’s annual Friends of Scouting event, called Boypower. Watch the video below to learn how council leaders believe Durant’s ability to stay prepared in any situation dovetails with the spirit of Scouting.
