A crew of Scouts and their leaders from American Canyon Troop 62 went on a life changing summer trek through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Philmont is the Boy Scouts of America’s premier high adventure camp covering 214 square miles of vast wilderness with trails that climb from 6,500 feet to as high as 12,441 feet. During their trek Troop 62 hiked 75 miles over twelve days. The crew made what amounts to a Scouting pilgrimage with their trip to Philmont.

“Philmont is an adventurous Scouting experience that you can’t get anywhere else,” said Aaron Ramos, crew leader and Eagle Scout. “Not only does it test your physical abilities, but challenges different life skills as well.”

The group of Scouts and their advisors carried everything they needed to survive during the trek on their backs while hiking from camp to camp. They participated in backcountry programs along the way including rock climbing, archery, rifle shooting and serving at a cowboy campfire. The trek included a conservation project where the Scouts learned and participated in the upkeep of Philmont’s ecosystem. Along the trek, Scouts endured tough challenges including backpacking in bear and mountain lion territory, steep climbs, and often-inclement weather.

“Everyone had a great time during our adventure,” said Ed Shollenberger, adult advisor. “Some of these boys have been together since they were in Cub Scouts and I regard this as a crowning achievement in their Scouting life. Each participant had to deal with adversity using all their Scouting skills. Most rewarding was watching this group of young men come together as a team and successfully support each other.”

Starting August 12, Troop 62 will meet Tuesdays at 6:30PM at the American Canyon Boys & Girls Club.
